Marie Herwald HermannBit by Bit Above the Edge of Things We’re very pleased to invite you to ‘Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things’, Danish artist Marie Herwald Hermann’s first exhibition at PLHK as well as her first solo project in Chicago. An opening reception form Marie takes place on November 2nd; the show continues until December 22nd. Hermann’s work is informed by the objects of the everyday and draws meaning from the way individuals unconsciously create relationships with the domestic objects present in daily life, the “non-spectacular” objects and the idea of arrangements. Drawn to the transitional periods of the day like dawn and dusk, time spans in which clarity fades into ambiguity, and our perception of individual objects gradually become absorbed into the gathering shadows, until everything merges into the single shadow of night. It is a moment when precision and exactitude succumb to the symbolic, the imaginative and, eventually, the unknown. It is a transition where the fixity of the world starts to slip, becomes more fluid and more open to interpretation and abstraction. Marie Herwald Hermann received her MFA from the Royal College of Art in London in 2009. Since then, she has exhibited extensively and widely. In 2017, her solo exhibitions included ‘Shields and the Parergon’ at Reyes Projects in Birmingham, MI and ‘dusk turned dawn’ at Blackthorn at NADA, Miami. In 2016 she presented ‘Northern Light, Pontiac Rise’ at Galerie Nec in Paris and ‘A Gentle Blow to the Rock’ at Gallerie NeC in Hong Kong. She has also presented installations in numerous group exhibitions in the US, Denmark, Italy, China, Sweden and Germany. Her work is held in the collections of the Danish Art Foundation, the Denver Art Museum, the Servre Museum, Nordenfjeldske Kunstindustrimuseum, the Cranbrook Art Museum, the Jingdezhen Ceramic Art Museum and the Rothschild Collection. In 2013 she was awarded the Kresge Artist Fellowship, the Danish Art Foundation grant in 2009 and 2016, and the Annie and Otto Johs. Detlefs’ grant for young experimental ceramic artist in 2010. Marie was born in Copenhagen and lives and works in Chicago. | Dusk, 2018, porclain, stoneware | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | Bit by Bit, 2018, poreclain, stoneware | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | Dawn, 2018, porcelain, stoneware | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | And, in Between the Drops, the Rain, 2018, porcelain, stoneware | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | A Heavy Sun, 2018, porcelain, stoneware | Installation view, Bit by Bit Above the Edge of Things | Miles of Silent, But Not Now, 2018, porclain, stoneware, silicone |
